Rated 5 out of 5 by ck27 from Reasonably Fast Yeast Normally I would have used maybe T-58 or BE-256 yeast Strains for my ales but decided to try out the Generic Yeast Included in Mr Beer kits and its surprisingly fast acting I put it in my LBK and it shot off like a rocket and my brew has a nice foam layer on it, and I'm surprised with the speed, my house sits around 54-72 degrees and the yeast is loving it, I wouldn't be surprised if the brew finished much faster than the 3 weeks suggested in the rather poor Mr Beer extract instructions. I wanted to try mixing it with t-58 but my order for that yeast was going to take too long to arrive so I'm stuck with this strain. Whatever it is, I would like to know that the closest Named strain of yeast to this would be. I have heard S-33 is pretty similar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mic Gone Dog Brewing Inc from Works just fine So far, each batch of beer I've tried using this yeast has worked just fine. As long as one follows the recipes, I see no reason to substitute with any other yeast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Sideburns from Works great! Had some really old Mr. Beer, which had been given as a gift, put in a dark corner and forgotten about, until a couple months ago. Needless to say, the yeast it had was long dead, but I tried using it anyway (1st brew you see). Nothing. I ordered some of the dry ale yeast, and within 2 weeks, I had beer! Very impressed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by hombre243 from Good all around Ale yeast to have just in case. I got a couple bad beer kits from other companies and needed new yeast. I had 3 kits and used the packets of yeast from their kits in those batches. But one packet of yeast did not work. I took the yeast out of the last kit and made a large starter wort with the last packet and brewed the last batch and also the one before it. Luckily all kits finished. However they were old kits. I had moved and stored all my brewing items including the kits. When I finally got around to brewing them, of the 3 kits, this ale yeast was the only one that worked perfectly. It was an American Porter from Mr. Beer. The other kit did not start so I robbed the yeast from the last kit and made the starter with it. I was chewin on my nails until the starter got built up enough for 2 batches and then I pitched 1/2 of it into the batch that was brewed already, and brewed up the last kit. I pitched the starter into that batch and it started fermentation within 2 hours. That is when I ordered the Dry Ale Yeast from Mr. Beer. Just in case I needed extra yeast to cover for a bad or old packet. Long story I know, but today I had to make another heavy duty starter for a big IPA. Over 28 hours and no activity. Back to the lab. I made up a starter wort of 2 cups water and 1/4 cup DME. That should kick start the batch. If there is any live yeast left from the original packet it should revive some and help out. Saved by the GOOD yeast from Mr. Beer. Again. I recommend that home brewers have some of this on hand. It could pull your batch out of the slump and kick start a slow or stalled fermentation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Malty Mike from Can't make beer without yeast. Needed fresh yeast for a refill that I hadn't been able to brew up because I was moving. I received the yeast in a timely manner, it's perfect for the temperature range where I use my fermenter and the beer I made turned out great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Erik S from Great yeast for when you just need a bit more... After reading what others have written about their experiences with their brews, I ordered this so I could double the yeast I add to my batches. You get one with most cans, so a second isn't necessary but seems to help clean up some of the off-flavors sooner.

How long does dry ale yeast last before you have to use it? ie: shelf life.

Asked by: Bob A
The expiration date of the yeast packet, corresponds to the expiration date on the bottom of the can. Cheers!
