Dark amber in color and rich in flavor, this "big brew" will give you a warming sensation all the way down. At around 8% ABV, it's the type of beer that we like to call a "stay-at-home" beer. Because it's so complex, give this brew about 6 months to condition. It's worth the wait.

RECIPE INCLUDES:

WARNING: Due to the large amount of malt, your keg may overflow or explode! Maintaining proper fermentation temperatures towards the lower end of the yeasts range is key to preventing this problem. (See brewing instructions for details).

Imperial red with bourbon/ barrel flavors

This one does take a long time and you'd think something that's little more than Bewitched Amber and the Weissbier mixes together wouldn't end up being so complex.Medium amber look similar to the picture. (Most of my mrbeer brews are always darker than the pictures). Aroma is malt and the taste is a dance between the amber and the weissbier. Both are obvious - light and malty blend to make a nuanced malty drink that nods towards barleywine. And the surprise which user mjc925 mentioned below is how it has a bourbon-barrel-aged taste to it. Very interesting element with no addition of wood.Tastes a bit sticky at the end and boozy and packs a bit of a punch when you're into your 2nd one. This is a great bigger beer than you might expect closer to barleywine than to strong ale. Almost no bitterness or citrus makes it very unike most DIPAs.And I'm sorry to see this one's been archived -- I guess it was not popular. You can still build it with off-the-shelf ingredients

    Easy to brew

I just brewed this one which has a suggested conditioning time of nine months. I can't rate the taste until next Sept.

    Best Beer I've ever made!

I brewed this beer up last year and let it condition for about 11 months. I tried it last Christmas. I have to say it was the best beer I've brewed yet. Taste is fantastic. The hardest part is the waiting...but it is worth it!

Big Red One - very complex flavor

First this is a review for Big Red One since it looks like some reviews are actually for different brews. I brewed this pretty much as directed except for adding 2 oz of Carapils for a bit of improved mouthfeel. Fermented 21 days at average 66 degrees (+cold crash 3 days). OG 1.083 FG 1.020 (~8.27 ABV) (no spillover in LBK). Conditioned for about 7 months before even trying it. This is a very complex tasting different sort of beer. Definitely not a lawnmower or chugging beer think a sipping on a cool evening beer. Malty more than hoppy but not out of balance (the wheat extract compliments the Amber well). Closest thing in a craft beer I can put my finger on is some of those high end beers brewed in old bourbon casks. Defiantly a fun beer to make unique flavor. Give to a friend and they are not quite sure what to make of it. Downsides are long lead time and very expensive (watch for sales like I did). Still have some left and just mellowing and improving with age. So start it in the Spring for a great beer the following winter not a summer beer!
